Your consultation and treatments

We like to allow two hours on your initial meeting to assess your main concerns and to understand what your overall state of health is like.  We as acupuncturists need to listen, observe and examine you to get a thorough picture about the nature of your situation.

An important aspect of traditional acupuncture is the palpation of twelve Chinese pulses upon the radial artery at the wrists. This palpation gives an enormous amount of information related to the quantity and quality of energy in each of your meridians and their corresponding body mind functions.

What will an acupuncture treatment involve?

What does it feel like – does it hurt?

You may not even feel an acupuncture needle go through the skin and if it is left in place it is hardly felt. When the needle touches your acupuncture point you may well experience a brief tingling or mild sensation. Some points are more sensitive than others but the sensation is short lived. The majority of people describe acupuncture treatment as virtually painless.

How might you feel after an acupuncture treatment?

Commonly after an acupuncture treatment you may experience a pleasant feeling of deep relaxation, calmness and you may feel tired and drowsy for a few hours. This drowsiness is worth bearing in mind if you plan to drive or to use any other machinery soon afterwards. Other reactions to an acupuncture treatment can be, a burst of energy, euphoria or a feeling of being invigorated.

How many acupuncture treatments will you need?

We do not know until you have been seen.  We can gauge your response to acupuncture after 6-8 weeks of treatment. Acute situations usually respond quicker, i.e. a few weeks compared to a condition that has been long standing, i.e. more likely to be a couple of months or more. The time it takes to restore your energy back into balance and alleviate your symptoms is influenced by how long you have been ill, your lifestyle, your unique constitution and your age.

Restoring the balance of chi can be immediate or slow, dramatic or subtle. Acupuncture treatments tend to build upon each other cumulatively. Your return to health can show times of progress as well as temporary setbacks. In the healing process a small number of people may experience a brief increase in their symptoms as your chi starts to re-balance and then settle.

Is there anything you need to know about before your treatment?

For you to get the most out of your acupuncture treatment we encourage you to schedule plenty of time to come to your appointment so your stress hormones are not racing. It is also advisable to avoid a big meal, alcohol, tea and coffee for at least two hours beforehand.

What is the best thing for you to do after a treatment?

For the first six to twelve hours after having acupuncture it is advisable to avoid, alcohol, stimulants, a hot sauna, sex, vigorous exercise session and a heavy meal. Having just had your chi energy balanced by acupuncture it is advisable to avoid these actions that could possibly undo some of your treatment.

"Two people suffering the same medical condition will receive completely different combinations of acupuncture points according to their unique situation."

Your first acupuncture treatment can be a long session and we ask you to allow up to two hours. Subsequent acupuncture treatments are generally between 40-60 minutes long. Each time you come for treatment, you’ll have time to tell us of any changes that you notice within yourself.

As you are a unique individual and your needs need to be likewise tailored to you. Acupuncture points will be selected according to your specific needs. Two people suffering the same medical condition will receive completely different combinations of acupuncture points according to their unique situation. Treatment involves using a combination of acupuncture needles, moxibustion and, in some cases, specially adapted tuning forks. When we needle, our purpose is to touch the acupuncture point. In some situations we leave the needles in the acupuncture point several minutes.

"The majority of people describe acupuncture treatment as virtually painless."

"The time it takes to restore your energy back into balance and alleviate your symptoms is influenced by how long you have been ill, your lifestyle, your unique constitution and your age."

That depends on how ill or weak you are.  For the majority and initially, you will usually require once a week acupuncture treatments; as improvements are achieved and maintained your appointments are gradually spaced out. Depending on your condition, you may reach a stage where you do not need  to have acupuncture or you may choose to have an acupuncture session a few times a year as part of a preventative health care measure.
